Audley Scarcroft

Location: Scarcroft Park, Leeds

Project Value: £620,000

History of Scarcroft Park

Scarcroft Lodge, a historic estate in Leeds, West Yorkshire, was erected in 1830 by Newman Cash and thrived under subsequent owners like Robert Tennant and the Earl of Mexborough. Hosting notable figures such as Lady Mary Savile, it transitioned into the Yorkshire Electricity Power Company’s headquarters in 1945. During WWII, it functioned as a convalescent hospital. Recently restored, it now serves as a retirement village, reclaiming its place in the public eye after 70 years.

Project Outcome

Services Utilised

DOFF Cleaning

DOFF Cleaning

Externally, we utilised the DOFF cleaning system to meticulously clean the entire building. This high-temperature, low-pressure cleaning method effectively removed dirt, grime, and biological growth from the stone surfaces without causing any damage. After the cleaning
process, any necessary stone repairs were undertaken with precision. The repaired areas were expertly colour-matched to blend seamlessly with the existing stone, ensuring a uniform and aesthetically pleasing appearance. This thorough cleaning and careful
restoration process revitalised the building’s exterior, enhancing its overall appeal and longevity.

Stone Repair

Stone Repair

Our comprehensive stone repair services included meticulous restoration of the building’s stonework. We addressed all damaged stone areas, ensuring each repair was expertly colour-matched to the existing material for a seamless integration. Notably, we restored the main entrance, which was weathered and crumbling. By carefully repairing and matching the stone, we brought it back to its original state. Additionally, we repaired stone parapets on eight different elevations and repointed various sections with lime mortar on the west, north, and south elevations. This detailed work not only preserved the buildings historical integrity but also improved its structural resilience.

Masonry Repair

Masonry Repair

The masonry repair works involved both extensive structural modifications and precise restorative efforts. Internally, we undertook significant structural adjustments, including opening new doorways and infilling some existing windows. We also removed existing
chimneys and walls in various rooms and hallways, replacing them with new masonry and steelwork. On the ground floor, first floor, and second floor, we repaired window and doorframe lintels, ensuring the structural soundness and aesthetic continuity of these elements. Externally, we removed the old render from the courtyard and re-rendered it to a higher standard and finish, significantly enhancing its appearance and durability.

Structural Repair Works

Structural Repair Works

Our structural repair works were critical in ensuring the stability and functionality of the building. Internally, we made substantial modifications by opening new doorways and infilling some existing windows. We also removed several chimneys and walls, replacing them with new masonry and steelwork to maintain structural integrity. On the first floor, we provided additional support with new steelwork and padstones. The main entrance required significant structural work; we repaired the weathered and crumbling stone, colour-matching it to its original state, and reinforced it with steelwork. These efforts were complemented by internal and external chimney repairs, as well as the repair and repointing of stone parapets and elevations using lime mortar, which preserved the building’s historic character while enhancing its structural robustness.
