Restoration of Rugby Radio Station
Scarcroft Lodge, a historic estate in Leeds, West Yorkshire, was erected in 1830 by Newman Cash and thrived under subsequent owners like Robert Tennant and the Earl of Mexborough.
Audley Scarcroft
Location: Rugby, Warwickshire
Project Value: £1.200,000
Rugby Radio Station in Warwickshire holds a unique place in British communication history. Opened in 1926, it quickly became a global hub for long-distance radio transmission. At its peak in the 1950s, it boasted the title of the world’s largest radio transmitting station, handling vital communications across vast distances. From early Morse code transmissions to facilitating NASA’s space missions, Rugby Radio Sation played a critical role in connecting the world.
For the Stone & Masonry Repairs Ltd team, working on such a historically significant site was a special undertaking. The station’s massive infrastructure, of brick buildings, required skilled restoration techniques to preserve this landmark of communication. Being entrusted with the site’s restoration, having it played such a pivotal role in global connectivity was a distinct honour for any restoration company.
The team at Stone & Masonry Repairs Ltd initially engaged in the Rugby Radio Station renovation project in 2018, collaborating with Morgan Sindall to develop a comprehensive scope of work, method of working, and provisional program. Following Morgan Sindall’s successful bid for the project, the team proceeded to retender for the Historical Brickwork Package. Upon winning the tender, the team commenced on-site activities in May 2020, focusing on brickwork and pointing samples for evaluation by the client and architect, vHH (van Heyningen and Haward Architects).

Our stone repair works encompassed salvaging and re-bedding coping stones to ensure the preservation and structural integrity of the building. Additionally, we employed state-of-the-art DOFF cleaning techniques, utilising steam-based technology to meticulously clean both the brickwork and stonework, restoring them to their original splendor.
Within the realm of masonry repair, our team executed a comprehensive array of tasks aimed at fortifying the structural integrity of the building. This included creating new brickwork openings of up to 900mm, reinforced with concrete and stainless steel lintels for added support. Over 50 padstones were meticulously installed to bolster steel frame support, alongside crack stitching, repointing, and the closure of existing openings. Salvaged glazed bricks were ingeniously repurposed for infilling, while masonry repairs and meticulous attention to M&E chases rounded out our comprehensive masonry repair efforts.
Our structural repair works were multifaceted, addressing both internal and external elements of the building. Externally, we tackled issues such as repointing with 3.5 NHL, installing external padstones for steel support, and the meticulous repair and replacement of damaged bricks. New brick fillets were artfully added for enhanced structural support and aesthetic appeal. Internally, we thoroughly constructed infill panels at both the Power Hall and Transmission Hall ends, along with stair tower extensions and a reception extension featuring a wheelchair access window. To ensure safety and longevity, secondary bracket systems were installed during the placement of GRC units, complemented by waterproofing measures including timber, marine ply, lead, and mastic joints.
Our DOFF cleaning services employed cutting-edge technology to rejuvenate both brickwork and stonework surfaces. By harnessing the power of steam, we were able to effectively remove years of dirt, grime, and environmental pollutants, restoring the building’s exterior to its original grandeur. Whether tackling stubborn stains or delicately cleaning intricate stonework details, our DOFF cleaning process delivered exceptional results, breathing new life into the building’s façade.
In conclusion, the restoration of the Rugby Radio Station has been a collaborative effort marked by dedication and passion for preserving history.
